Wireless Internet For Laptop Computers
If you have got yourself a new laptop and are thinking of enabling it with an internet connection then the best option is to choose wireless network connections. Why wireless? If you have a wireless internet connection then you will be able to use your laptop from anywhere in your home whether it is your bedroom, living room or front porch. If you get your laptop enabled with wireless internet at office then the benefit is two-fold: you will be able to browse the internet from anyplace in your office and you can also take advantage of the wireless networking that will help you to get connected to any other PC or laptop in your office.
Wireless Network Configurations
Although it may seem quite confusing initially but the truth is that wireless network connections are easy to implement and you can do-it-yourself at home. You can create a wireless network at home or office and connect your laptop on the network. It will cut off the headache of cabling and minimize or remove any wire related problems or issues.
Here's an image of how a wireless network works. The image includes a DSL modem, a wireless gateway with 4 wired network ports, so that you can connect a PC in your kitchen, with that of the home office PC, your laptop and the PC in the children's room. Here are some of the aspects that you need to take care of when enabling wireless network connections for your laptop: Routers: You can use different types of routers and gateways for the home network. You can purchase a LinkSys or a D-Link gateway with a built-in 802.11b to connect to the laptop. Give a name to the wireless network you are using like Home_Gary. This name is also known as the service set identifier (SSID) and it will always be case-sensitive and unique. Specifying Gateway SSID: One important thing that you need to remember is that you should avoid using the default SSID, which is normally provided by the manufacturer. You will need to connect wireless gateway to your cable modem and follow these steps: 1. Power the gateway device followed by powering down of the cable modem.
2. Connect gateway WAN port to the cable modem's Ethernet port and then power up your cable modem.
3. Connect gateways LAN Port 1 to the Ethernet port of your office PC.
4. Restart your PC.
5. Once your laptop is connected to the gateway, open the IE browser and set your SSID for the home wireless network
6. Set the WIFI protected access of WPA encryption for your network
7. Add your home SSID to the list of preferred network. You can also add your home wireless network manually to the list of preferred networks if the wireless auto configuration in Windows XP or Vista is enabled. You can manually do it by clicking: Control Panel> Network and Internet Connections> Network Connections. Right click Wireless Network Connection>properties. friends
