The Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router Drivers
Linksys wireless G broadband router is probably the best 802.11g based routers you can find for its very competitive price. Indeed, you will find it priced the same as the related WAP54G Wireless-G Access Point.
Of course it functions on a DHCP server. One of the newer features to be observed in this router is the opening for specifying the WINS server. This is not exactly useful for smaller networks but large networks with a necessity for NetBIOS authentication will find that using the DHCP function of this router is far wiser than using a Windows NT or 2000's DHCP server.
You will find that it comes with a handy manual to walk you through the initial set-up process that is pretty much comprehensive with a wizard that covers the process of choosing the basic SSID, IP address and security settings. You can find the complete router setup information in the manual segregated by the different operating systems like Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
You will also find a brief but well-detailed explanation of the DHCP vs. Static IP networks so that you can be well aware of the important choices ahead. And a short Ethernet cable is included in the box which is a long-standing tradition of Linksys products and you don't have to hunt around for a cable, just plug it in and start. One of the rare products to offer time-based filtering, you can use it to cut off the internet access of your internal clients at timing you can specify. On the negative side you can't filter content and access to certain sites but you can most definitely block traffic on particular ports from reaching the LAN clients. From the viewpoint of security, the WRT54G concentrates on the outgoing traffic rather than incoming. The unit is a NAT device and lacks a firewall, mail notification or any incoming data from the WAN. The documentation states the ability to keep at bay ActiveX, Java, and browser cookies at the WAN port but it is not present in the unit and Linksys has promised to include this in the future update. A small compensation for lack of security has been made in the bundled version of Norton Internet Security 2003 which provides anti-virus protection and a configurable firewall, adware protection and pop-up blocker. But all the same, you will need to upgrade after 60 days. It supports remote administration so you can specify the port number that will give you a degree of security and activate the wireless MAC filter to specify the number of clients (40 is the limit) accessing a particular access point. There is a logging capacity that provides the administrator with separate logs for incoming and outgoing traffic. However don't be fooled by the modest looks and dreary package, only a small label on the outside with 54G suggests its new Wireless-G abilities. The packaging hides much more than the average complement of indicator lights for links and activity. The reset switch is also provided for you to get back to default factory settings of you happen to mess up any settings. The tech support is excellent and you can be assured of a stable and good product from a reputable company.
